History of Fishmans (often transcribed as HISTORY Of Fishmans) is a four-disc live rarities compilation album released by Japanese dub/rock group Fishmans on February 19, 2025. The compilation album is mostly comprised of unreleased live performances and demos from throughout the band's career, each disc representing a specific band era (excluding the year 1996). Compiled by drummer Kin-Ichi Motegi and mixer ZAK, the album shares a title with a 2022 two-concert event of the same name, History of Fishmans. The artwork was created by Keiji Ito.
The contents of HISTORY Of Fishmans are divided into four discs, each representing an era of the band's. The first, titled "1987-1991" begins with a demo of A Piece of Future from 1998 (which was Sato's final composition), but otherwise remains in the confines of its stated date range. Purported to contain the band's entire first concert, the disc also contains previously unreleased tracks such as Ska, Happy Man, 70%, もう言わないで and くつ下 alongside other songs whose performances had yet to be heard, yet whose compositions were later recorded and released officially through other releases. The disc ends on an unheard radio commercial for the band's EP Corduroy's Mood. The second disc, titled "1992-1995" largely features Media Remoras-era releases of the band's, including unreleased tracks いつまでも and 待ってる人 (the former of which having technically been released on In Space Shower TV Episode.1), alongside previously unheard bonus track 涙くんさよなら as performed alongside Kazufumi Kodama. The disc is mostly comprised of known songs though, including alternate studio mixes of 100ミリちょっとの, 頼りない天使, ナイトクルージング and 新しい人. The disc also includes both a live recording and demo recording of Melody, both bookending a live performance of 静かな朝. The album's third disc, titled "1997-1998" contains only six tracks, the final 1999 live recording of 感謝(驚) being cut short significantly as the majority of the song is absent. Long Season'97 as performed on July 4, 1997 @Shibuya Club Quattro (which comprises of the band's entire concert that day) is present after having been remixed, and Go Go Round This World! precedes it, appearing earlier on the band's previous Go Go Round This World! (Echoes of Infinity Mix) single (but first on 2000 video album 記憶の増大). The disc also includes a full version of the shortened Weather Report as it appeared on 記憶の増大, plus an atypically long recording of それはただの気分さ at over 11 minutes from June 7, 1998 @Hibiya Open-Air Concert Hall. The disc concludes with a recording of ひこうき performed live on December 28, 1998 @Akasaka Blitz, which was vocalist Shinji Sato's final concert. The album's fourth disc is a blu-ray video disc containing the full concert video of Fishmans' live performance on August 20, 2005 @Tarukawa Dock Open-Air Special Stage, which comprises of five songs: Weather Report with vocals by Ikuko Harada, ナイトクルージング with vocals by Hanaregumi, 頼りない天使 with vocals by UA, Melody with vocals by Kiyoshiro Imawano, and いかれたBaby with vocals by all of them together. The concert was the band's first concert since discontinuing live activities in 2000, marking the end of their 2001-2005 Hiatus period.
The album was announced during フイッシュマンズ TV, a Fishmans livestream held on their YouTube channel on July 16, 2024 @Kichimu Event Space & Cafe, where Motegi briefly discussed the compilation in no specific detail. While he spoke to interviewer Satoshi Mochizuki, Motegi revealed that the compilation album had been in the works since 2021, as a spiritual soundtrack album for the band's documentary film The Fishmans Movie released in the same year. Like the Fishmans Movie, the album is intended to provide the listener with an audio tour of Fishmans' career from beginning to end. The recording of それはただの気分さ as it appears on HISTORY Of Fishmans played quietly while Motegi spoke about the album on the livestream. Motegi explained that much of the album's content was unearthed by the Fishmans Movie archival team, and if it weren't for their work the band wouldn't have had access to the tapes which made this album possible. Motegi concluded in describing how he's spent much of his free time organizing the album, this being amidst his busy tour schedule alongside Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra.
The release date for this album was announced via Fishmans' Twitter account "FISHMANS_JAPAN" on November 20, 2024, during which they also teased the contents of every individual disc. Later, the album cover for this album was announced on Twitter on December 18, 2024 alongside a Natalie.mu article announcing Go Go Round This World! (Echoes of Infinity Mix). On January 12, 2025, the tracklist was added to the band's website. The album was first publicly distributed a day before its official release date on February 18 at merchandising tables during concert event February 18, 2025 @Tokyo Garden Theater.
