Polydor K.K., also known as Polydor Records, Polydor Japan, Universal Polydor and Universal Music K.K. was a record label established on October 1, 1971 in Japan. They are a subsidiary of German/British record label Polydor Limited. Established as Polydor K.K. (Kabushiki Kaisha) in April 1990, they were again renamed to Universal Music K.K. in 1999. Polydor has remained a mainstay of the Japanese music industry since its founding, eventually merging into Universal Music Japan in January 2009.
In late September of 1995, Japanese dub/rock group Fishmans would sign onto Polydor Japan, moving away from their previous label Media Remoras. The band would print all of their physical releases with Polydor going forward, the label also participating in a 1998 reissue series titled Fishmans Reissue-Series. The band was automatically reassigned to the aforementioned Universal Music Japan in 2009 with the company's label merger.
